“A Writers Retreat” Schedule
The writers' retreat at the Blue Belle Inn in St. Ansgar was great. I did more public speaking than I've
done in a long time, but the setting was informal and a lot of fun. The Blue Belle Inn is beautiful and
the food was amazing. Inn keeper and author Sherrie Hansen gets my vote for best multi-tasker of all
times. I got a little fatigued just watching her balance the writing activities with running the inn.
Everyone seemed to get something out of the discussion topics and writing exercises. I especially got a
kick out of Fred, a 93-year-old local writer who attended and read to us from his manuscript. He was
sharp as a whip. The murder mystery dinner was fun. I found it a little curious to be sitting in Iowa
listening to actors speaking with old south accents. Not to mention enjoying Mark Hansen's Tex-Mex
food the night before. It was all good! Thanks Sherrie--Norm

Amy, Norm and I were treated to a very special weekend at the Blue Belle Inn, thanks to Sherrie! She
has the most beautiful, warm old house with so many rooms it reminded me of my dreams where I
discover another room I didn't know was there.
I haven't eaten so many gourmet meals, treats and appetizers in the same weekend EVER. Fantastic
food. The workshop was great with a character exercise I found especially useful. Each of our groups
came up with amazing ideas for books from using that format.
We met wonderful people in that small Iowa town, including Sherrie and her husband Mark--who
makes delicious guacamole and is a very believable actor, besides. During the murder mystery dinner,
when he was "dying", Norm and I had a moment of near-panic wondering if, in fact, he was. Now
that is good and I don't panic easily.--Christine
